A music practice app for a classical student has a harder job than a guitar game. It has to read real notation, hear a violin or a flute, and fit around a teacher who already sets the work. This list compares ten apps on what matters for that job, with prices and features checked on each app's official page in September 2026.
Five things a classical practice app should do
Most "best music app" lists rank apps by how fun they are. For a student working on a Suzuki book, a grade exam or an audition piece, five other questions decide whether an app earns its place on the music stand.
- Feedback on the score. Does it listen and show you which notes were out of tune or out of time, on the notation you read from?
- Your own sheet music. Can you practise the piece your teacher gave you, or only the app's library?
- Accompaniment. Can you rehearse with the piano part before you meet your pianist?
- A link to your teacher. Can your teacher see what you practised and how it went?
- Price. What does it cost per month or per year once the free part runs out?

Apps that listen and mark your score
These apps hear you play and show the result on notation. For a classical student, this category replaces "I think that sounded fine" with something you can check.
AIMU
AIMU listens to a recording of you playing and marks each note on the score by colour, so you see which bars need work before your next lesson. You can convert your own PDF sheet music, practise along with the accompaniment, and loop a passage at a slower tempo. It runs in the browser on phone, tablet or computer, supports 14+ classical instruments and works in seven languages.
Students connected to a teacher through AIMU Teacher get 50% off their plan, which brings Student to about €4 a month. Your teacher sees the scores and recordings you share.
Best for: string, wind and piano students practising their own repertoire between lessons. Price: free plan with 5 analyses a month; Student €7.99/month (€55/year); Pro €15/month (€100/year).
Tonestro
Tonestro mixes video lessons, exercises and live feedback on pitch, rhythm and intonation, with points and streaks that bring you back each day. [1] It covers wind and string instruments and added piano in September 2026.
Best for: younger wind and brass players who like a game layer. Watch for: Premium is sold per instrument.
Trala
Trala is violin only, with video teachers and feedback on pitch and rhythm over interactive sheet music. [2] Its library runs from beginner tunes to Bach.
Best for: teen and adult violin beginners learning without a teacher.
MakeMusic Cloud (formerly SmartMusic)
MakeMusic Cloud is built for school ensembles: a large repertoire library, red and green notes on the score, and a gradebook that syncs with Google Classroom, Schoology and Canvas. [3]
Best for: school band, orchestra and choir programmes where the teacher sets assignments for a whole class.
MatchMySound
MatchMySound compares your playing with the score note by note and lets teachers set assignments, track history and leave comments. [4] It is web only; teachers use it free while their students pay $4.99 a month.
Best for: private teachers with many students who want a simple per-student setup.
ARPE
ARPE (listed as "ARPE: Piano Practice & Lesson") compares a student's playing with the teacher's recording and reports pitch, rhythm and dynamics bar by bar. [5] It is the only app on this list that states dynamics feedback.
Best for: piano students whose teacher already works on iPad. Watch for: piano only, and paid plans start at $14.99 a month.
Apps for accompaniment and practice tracking
These apps don't judge your playing. They help you organise it or give you a partner to play with.
- Appcompanist gives singers piano accompaniments with control over key, tempo and fermatas, including a classical voice collection. [6] Best for singers and choirs.
- Andante is a practice journal with a metronome, tuner, drone and recorder, plus streaks and charts. [7] Best if you want to track minutes and stay consistent.
- Modacity plans deliberate practice sessions, records you and lets you review your own takes. [8] Best for advanced students who already know what to listen for.
Game-style apps: a good start, thin on classical repertoire
Yousician and Simply Piano check your notes in real time and turn lessons into levels. [9] Both lean towards pop songs, and neither lets you bring the piece your teacher assigned.
Best for: absolute beginners, on guitar or piano, who need a reason to open the app every day.
Which app fits your situation
- You practise alone and see a teacher once a week: choose an app that marks your own repertoire on the score. AIMU and MatchMySound cover most instruments; ARPE covers piano.
- Your teacher runs a school ensemble: MakeMusic Cloud is built for that workflow.
- You play violin and have no teacher yet: Trala or Tonestro give you a guided path.
- You want to rehearse with the piano part: AIMU for instrumentalists, Appcompanist for singers.
- You mainly want the habit: Andante or Modacity keep you consistent.
Whichever you choose, the app works best as a second pair of ears between lessons. The method still matters: the music practice tips for students and how to practise slowly guides work with any of these tools.
